The 6th annual Art + Advocacy benefiting the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC) is focused on the unique role art therapy plays in healing the child abuse victims served at DCAC.
The festivities kick off tonight with an art preview at F.I.G. from 6-8 p.m, followed by a live and silent art auction this Thursday, November 1, where attendees can bid on works by more than 90 emerging and established artists (including the pieces above by Allison V. Smith, Bonny Leibowitz, and Benjamin Terry). Auction goers will also get to view an exhibit of artwork created by child abuse victims through the Art Therapy Program at DCAC.
Art Therapy is one of the free programs offered at DCAC for its clients. “When clients first come in, we do an assessment to see what their therapy needs are and from there, we develop a plan and choose a modality that will work for that child,” says Dr. Ashley Lind, the Center’s Chief Program Officer. Therapists typically have their clients start with pen and pencil and then work up to increasingly sensory media, such as sand and clay. In addition to Art Therapy, DCAC offers therapy dogs, and will begin offering Music Therapy and a Therapy Garden at their new center.
In addition to all the inspiring art, the evening will include tunes by DJ Lucy Wrubel (one of our favorite local mamas) and bites by Wendy Krispin Catering.
There are still tickets up for grabs at $50 for the preview, $150 for the auction party, or $175 for a combined preview and auction ticket… A small price for such an amazing cause, yes?
