What Gillea Allison Learned From Her Mom

(Gillea Allison with her mother, D Magazine Partners President, Christine Allison)

“When I was 18, I moved to Berkeley, California for a summer to “find myself.” My mom patiently allowed it but gave me one solid, simple piece of advice: “you don’t find yourself, you create yourself.”

Ten years and nine moves later, I’d say she was right.”

— Gillea Allison

Ed Note: Gillea Allison is one of the most intelligent, soulful, inspiring young women I know. Most recently, she was the Digital Operation Vote Lead for the Obama campaign. Her team ran 20 digital constituency programs, ranging from Women for Obama, to the campaign’s student and youth outreach to Veteran and Military Families among others.

Suffice to say, I am trying to absorb (steal) as much mothering wisdom from Christine Allison as humanly possible.
